| 内容記述 | Lexical pragmatics is one of the most rapidly developing fields in pragmatics, which claims that concept linguistically encoded may be pragmatically adjusted (i.e. concept loosening or narrowing) and construct ad hoc concept as part of the process of deriving the explicit content of the utterance. This view sheds lights not only on the understanding of figurative language such as metaphor, but also on the recovery of the explicature of the utterance. In this paper, we will be concerned with the English suffix -ish and argue that this suffix encodes procedural instruction for the hearer (or reader) to interpret the lexically encoded concept loosely or narrowly, and contributes to the relevance of the utterance by reducing processing effort. | |||||
