| 内容記述 | This is my third paper concerning Soseki NATSUME’s Kokoro (1914), in which K committed suicide and then Sensei decided to do so, too. My first essay on this topic (Yamauchi 1999) answers the question why K and Sensei committed suicide from the viewpoint of the relationship between Japanese ethics and social and information studies. The second one (Yamauchi 2004) mainly discusses more deeply how and why K killed himself, and concludes that K did so as a martyr to the Pure Land of Amitabha Buddha, which was the worship to which his family had been faithful. In this essay, we will consider why Sensei slept with his head westward at the night when K killed himself and argue that it is related to some Rakugo, traditional Japanese comic stories, named ‘Shinigami (Reaper)’ and ‘Shinagawa Shinju (Suicide Pact in Shinagawa)’. | |||||||
