The Lewis^Y (Le^Y) antigen (a difucosylated type 2 blood group-related carbohydrate antigen) and the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in formalin fixed and paraffin embedded sections of the stomach were detected by monoclonal mouse antibodies BM-1/JIMRO and anti-PCNA, using immunohistochemical techniques. The PCNA negative cells in gastric cancer, gastric mucosa showing intestinal metaplasia and normal gastric mucosa have expressed Le^Y antigen. The Le^Y expression has increased with differentiation from the stem cells to the parietal cells, mucous neck cells and chief cells, and decreasing the rate of proliferation of gastric cancer. The strongest expression of Le^Y antigen has been occurred in atrophic and apoptotic cells showing shrinkage with pyknosis. |
