We studied on the aging changes of the esophageal mucosa, dysplasia and the role of apoptosis in these changes histologically and immunohistochemically in 81 autopsy cases. The thickness of esophageal epithelium increased until the twenties. In normal esophageal mucosa, epithelial cells in basal area did not express the Lewis Y antigen, but strongly expressed the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). Superficial cells strongly expressed the Lewis Y antigen, but did not express the PCNA. Dysplasia of the esophageal mucosa occured after 30 years old and the cases showing dysplasia increased with aging. Cell proliferation rate of mucosal cells showing dysplasia increased immunohistochemically. We found many lesions where the Lewis Y antigen expression differed from normal mucosa. The frequency of their occurrences increased with aging. In these lesions, apoptosis was considered to be suppressed. |
