| 内容記述 | The goal of this paper is to examine whether second language errors can be explained by innate constraints as first language errors can. We adopt the conception of Universal Grammar in the generative linguistic theory, and assume that human language is composed of invariant principles and variable parameters for cross-linguistic similarities and differences, respectively. In this view, language acquisition is a process of setting parameters for a given particular language, and grammatical errors can be analyzed as the results of parameter mis-setting. This analysis is called the Continuity Hypothesis, which has been examined in both first and second language acquisition research. The present study further investigates this hypothesis by observing grammatical errors from both Japanese-speaking learners of English and learners of Japanese as a second language. We found grammatical errors consistent with the Continuity Hypothesis in both learners. The results suggest that second language errors can be explained by properties of neither their native nor target languages. Its theoretical implications are discussed. | |||||||
