| 内容記述 | This paper deals with the image of child, especially the old-fashioned child in Dickens' first major novel Dombey and Son. This novel marks strongly the division in early Victorian England between the new, reconstructed world of middle-class adulthood and the world of childhood, which is figured as an endangered culture. Dickens gives the world of childhood its own distinctive voice and viewpoint as the new-fashioned materialistic world is filtered through the strange young-old child. So it presents Andrews' principles of metaphysical-historical source focusing primarily on the grown-up child. It examines the problem of child-parent relationship and analyzes the pride of characters, noticing Dickens himself and his life. It also examines the two main images and symbols, the railway and the sea, connecting with the temporal and the immortal, the mechanical and the vital and the masculine and the feminine. | |||||||
