内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 For William Wordsworth poetry has been not only the product of his creative imagination, but also the object which should be elaborated, or carefully handled. This notion is distinctively embodied both in Poems edited by himself and in his revision of The Prelude. Further, as for the poet's conscientious treatment of them, these works are supported by his unifing intention, which is significant as it is closely linked to one of his fundamental concerns-his self. In Poems of 1815 Wordsworth, the editor, unifies his miscellaneous poems through the detailed classification and deliberate arrangement, and this will to systematize corresponds well to his lasting hope to have a unified identity which he tries to realize on various occasions including the writing of autobiography. But this poetic activity has a fatal problem, since, being pushed, it makes him indecisive to settle the meaning of the poems, and consequently, the unifing system itself becomes unstable. The same phenomenon can be witnessed in his revisionary working of The Prelude. The poet's unifing intention is most obviously realized in his restructuring of The Two-Part Prelude of 1799. He introduced into it the narrative form so that the poem reappeared as a coherent story about the recovery of his poetic faculties. However, this revision proves not to be universally effective, because some memories could not find accurate semantic representation in the narrative. And this problematic phase of the unification affects the figure of his self which is to be signified by the poem. Because of its ineffectiveness, the revised version can do little more than represent the poet as an amorphous figure who still holds enigmatic memories. But it is not impossible to discern a certain figure of him in these two works. Wordsworth's longtime commitment illustrates his strong will to evade the moment of his termination as a poet, and this posture, however ironically, could constitute one of the bases on which his self surely rests.
