Empathy consisted of cognitive and affective empathy is one of the social skills in human for creating and maintaining the relationship with others. Since deficient of empathy would lead to bullying behavior in children and adolescents, development of the strategies treating empathy may contribute to resolve bullying issues. Physical activity is expected as one of strategy for treating empathy; we recently found that usual physical activity contributes to maintaining better cognitive empathy in young adults. Furthermore, as an investigation in contributions of sports activity on empathy, our study has reported that Judo classes could grow empathy in college students. Thus, there is possibility that experiences of judo contribute to grow empathy in children and adolescents. In the present study, we aimed to test junior-high-schoolbased Judo classes on empathy in junior high school students using Multidimensional Empathy Scale(MES), which consists by 5 subscales; Perspective Taking (PT), Other-Oriented Emotional Reactivity (OER), Fantasy (F), Self-Oriented Emotional Reactivity (SER), and Emotional Susceptibility (ES). Sixty-eight students were answered questionnaires, MES and impressions of sports, before and after Judo unit, which consisted 8 times class focused on Ne-waza, then, the results of 63 respondents (30 boys and 33 girls) were analyzed. PT and OER were difference in gender, but F, SER or ES were not. There was no difference in impressions of sports, such as “Sports are fun” and “I am good at sports”, between boys and girls. OER in students after Judo unit was significantly lower than that before Judo unit. OER in students might be influenced not only by Judo unit but also puberty. Other components of empathy and impressions of sports were unaltered between before and after Judo unit. The change of “Sports are fun” indicated significant positive correlation with the change of PT and ES only in boys but not in girls. Our present findings imply that the classes caused students feeling fun of sports, contribute to grow empathy in junior high school students. |
